What is 'Big Head Disease'?
Before LPWF started, a brief survey revealed that "big head disease" was prevalent amongst ponies and horses in Lampang. This disease is due to poor nutrition where calcium is deficient, and in turn causes hormonal imbalance. This causes fibrous tissues formation in the facial bones and swelling which gives this condition it's name.
LPWF worked with the community and equine owners to improve feed quality and provide calcium supplements to the equines. This drastically improved their conditions and now there is rarely a case of this disease in Lampang. LPWF still continually assist equine owners to provide calcium and other supplements to prevent this and other nutritionally related conditions. Annually around 3,000 kg of calcium supplements are provided to the equines of Lampang.
